Review Your Spring Safety Checklist
PROTECT YOUR SKIN- Prioritize your skin when participating in any outdoor activities from UVA and UVB rays.
- Choose moisturizing creams or lotions that have an SPF of 30 or higher as part of your daily skin care routine.
- Wear sunscreen that have an SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours, or throughout the day as recommended.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing that will regulate your body temperature.
- Wear sunglasses or sunshades that have UVA and UVB protection.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat for maximum sun protection.
- Peak hours of sun exposure occur between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Avoid the harmful rays by working around these hours.
STAY HYDRATED- It's important to stay hydrated as the temperatures rise.
- Drink a glass or two of water before even heading out into the Texas heat!
- Make it a habit to carry a reusable water bottle around, even if you don't feel thirsty.
- Thirst is a sign of dehydration, so don't wait until you feel thirsty to drink water.
- If you are sweating regularly, consider sports drinks with electrolytes or electrolyte tablets.
- Limit sugary drinks as these can dehydrate you.
- Pay attention to signs of dehydration like fatigue, dizziness, or lightheadedness.
SEASONAL ALLERGIES- Spring means flower buds, blooming trees, and pollen!
- Make it a habit to check the pollen forecast and current pollen levels.
- If high pollen counts are forecasted, start taking your daily over-the-counter allergy medications before your symptoms start.
- Avoid outdoor activities if you are prone to flare-ups from morning to mid-day which is when the pollen count is the highest.
- If you have indoor air conditioning, use high-efficiency filters and change them regularly.
- After working in your yard for an extended period, be sure to remove the clothes you wore and rinse your skin and hair of any pollen as soon as you finish your tasks. (Pollen can stick to sheets, towels, and clothing)
INSECTS BITES & STINGS- We love springtime, but so do insects! Remember to apply insect repellant and have a protocol in place for any bites or stings.
- Stings can cause swelling so make sure to rinse out the area gently with soap and water.
- Remove any rings if the affected area is around your fingers before swelling occurs.
- Apply ice or a damp cloth and repeat as needed to the affected area.
- If the area has some itching or swelling, consider using hydrocortisone cream, calamine lotion, or even an antihistamine.
- If pain persists take over-the-counter pain relievers, like Tylenol or ibuprofen.
SPRING CLEANING- Organization is key!
- If you are using various cleaning products, make sure to read the label on the back of each one for any potential harm or dangers.
- Open windows for better air flow when using cleaning products.
- Wear gloves when using harsh chemicals and safety glasses when necessary.
- If you are cleaning your medicine cabinet, our team highly recommends getting rid of unwanted or expired medication properly. Find a location drop box near you by using your zip code.
RED FLAG AND STORM WARNINGS- Be prepared for any weather conditions and have an emergency plan for your family.
- Make it a habit to monitor your local weather conditions by using your weather application or watching the latest news.
- Have an updated travel map in your drawer.
- Ensure you have a plan in place and know your evacuation routes and designated meeting points.
- Have a "GO-BAG" ready that includes a first aid kit, three day supply of food, batteries, flashlights, water, backup batteries, duct tape, and portable chargers. Visit the FEMA website for a complete list.
- Have essential items ready to grab in case of any evacuations including, important documents, medications, and pet supplies.
